IR/Cardio
IR and Cardiovascular Procedures
Whether performed in the radiology suite, cardiac cath lab, or operating room, invasive radiology and cardiovascular procedures can be difficult areas to code correctly. The sweeping coding changes effective January 2011 significantly added to the complexity.
What’s more, these procedures are now under even greater scrutiny for their medical necessity. By comparing inpatient vs. outpatient documentation, MedLearn can determine if you are at risk. Ask for a medical necessity review to reveal whether you are in compliance.

MedLearn Approach and Objectives
MedLearn begins with a baseline audit sampling a number of special/interventional
radiology and cardiovascular procedures correlating quality of documentation
with integrity of coding and billing. From there, a multi-disciplinary approach
may be needed to reduce the identified error rate. This may include involvement
of radiologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, radiology technicians,
cardiac cath lab nurses, billing, and health information management staff
with hands-on training with coders shadowing physicians to understand the
process of diagnosis, treatment and coding.
If there are ongoing audits,
MedLearn will likely conduct some off site to save costs. MedLearn will
also provide key examples of how coding can go wrong.
